Prof. Quinn Slobodian

From a competitive pool of 3,500 artists and scholars, Slobodian is one of the 198 distinguished individuals across 53 disciplines who received this fellowship. With a meticulous application and peer review process, the Guggenheim Foundation makes its selections based on past professional accomplishments and exceptional promise. The 2025 class of Fellows will be part of the foundation’s centennial celebrations, commemorating a century of shaping American culture and thought. Since its inception in 1925, the foundation has granted more than $400 million in fellowships to support a community of nearly 20,000 fellows.

An authority on history, capitalism and politics, Slobodian teaches International History at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. A prolific writer and editor, he has authored multiple books and guest essays for major news outlets including the New York Times, Guardian, and New Statesman. His latest book Hayek’s Bastards: Race, Gold, IQ, and the Capitalism of the Far Right unpacks how neoliberalism fostered a philosophy centered around “three hards” – hardwired human nature, hard borders, and hard money post Cold War. His previous publication, Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism was bestowed with the American Historical Association’s George Louis Beer Prize.

Prior to his Guggenheim Fellowship, Slobodian held fellowships at Harvard University, Freie Universität Berlin, and Roma Tre. Several prominent organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Volkswagen Foundation have supported his research. He was also named as one of the World’s 25 Top Thinkers by Prospect UK in 2024.
