Heine Discusses China’s Economic Policies and Latin American Opportunities on CGTN America

Amb. Jorge Heine

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future recently appeared on CGTN America’s program “The Heat” to discuss the outcomes of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

During the program, Heine addressed the significance of China’s economic policies and their impact on Latin America. He emphasized the importance of China’s commitment to deepening reform and opening up, particularly in relation to technological advancement and green development.

Heine highlighted the potential for increased cooperation between China and Latin America in the green economy sector. He stated, “Latin America desperately needs to move up in the value chain from producing and exporting commodities to the next stage with more value added to these products.” He noted that Latin America possesses many key commodities essential for the green economy, such as copper and lithium.

The ambassador suggested that Chinese companies could explore joint ventures with Latin American firms to add value to these resources within the region. He provided an example, saying, “Electric buses, which are in so desperate need in the region, could be built in Latin America using those inputs.”

Heine also discussed the importance of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for global trade and economic growth. He emphasized the potential for the BRI to facilitate technological cooperation and economic development in partner countries.

Regarding China’s role in the global economy, Heine noted the country’s significant contribution to global economic growth and its increasing importance in international financial engagement. He stressed the need for continued economic stability in China, given its impact on the world economy.
