Heine on Chile’s China Connection

On October 17, 2023, Amb. Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future discussed the significance of President Gabriel Boric’s visit to China with DirectTV News, a broadcast throughout Latin America. He emphasizes that Chile’s participation in the third International Forum on the Belt and Road Initiative holds great importance as it reaffirms Chile’s strong relationship with China.
Heine notes that Chile has enjoyed a long-standing and mutually beneficial economic relationship with China, making it a vital partner for Chile’s economic growth. He highlights the expansion of the bilateral relationship to various areas beyond trade, such as science, technology, education, and tourism, forming a comprehensive strategic partnership.
The conversation also addresses concerns in some Latin American political circles regarding China’s political and economic influence in the region. Heine points out that while such concerns are raised during campaigns, practical economic ties often prevail, given China’s substantial role in the region’s economies.
The interview concludes by discussing Chile’s reaffirmation of the One China policy, emphasizing its long-standing diplomatic tradition, and its importance in the broader context of Chile’s relations with China.
