Najam Interviewed on Evolving State of U.S.-Pakistan Relations

On October 1, 2022, Adil Najam, Dean Emeritus and Professor of International Relations and Earth and Environment at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, appeared on DawnNews‘ “NewsEye” to discuss United States-Pakistan relations after recent visits by senior Pakistani officials, including Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto to the U.S., high-level visits by U.S. officials to Pakistan, and the appointment of a full-time U.S. ambassador to Pakistan.

Najam argues that U.S.-Pakistan relations are always in a permanent state of flux but they are intrinsically important for both the United States and Pakistan. “They were nigh as bad as many had feared in recent months and nor have they suddenly become wonderful just because of a few visits,” he noted. Given the complexities of both countries, including the domestic compulsions on both sides, Najam thinks we should not try to assess these relations episodically but should see them as a continuum of necessary adjustments on both sides.
