Heine Guest Edits “TI Observer” Issue on Ukraine and Active Non-Alignment
Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, guest-edited a special edition of TI Observer – a journal published by the Taihe Institute, a Beijing think tank – on active non-alignment and the strategy in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The issue, titled “The War in Ukraine and Active Non-Alignment,” features articles by scholars from around the world on the different stances taken on the war by countries like India, South Africa, Argentina, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) nations, as well as various pieces on the resurgence of non-alignment in today’s world. Heine also penned his own article in the issue, titled “The War in Ukraine and the Active Non-Alignment Option,” in which he argues that developing nations need to realize that if they want to safeguard their autonomy, “the last thing they need to do is to align themselves with either of the great powers.” Drawing on research from his latest book Active Non-Alignment and Latin America: A Doctrine for the New Century, Heine describes the adoption of active non-alignment in the international response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the continuation of such a strategy and its implications, as well as how the war marks a seismic shift in world affairs.
