Heine Discusses Need for New Non-Alignment Movement

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared on the China Africa Project’s podcast to discuss his new book and the emergence of a new non-alignment movement in the global south.

Ambassador Heine joined hosts Eric Olander and Cobus van Staden to explain why the time is right for countries in the Global South to start working more closely together with one another. Today, as Russia’s ties with the United States revert to their Cold War chilliness and the U.S. standoff with China intensifies, there are new calls to revive the non-aligned movement among developing countries. Heine has made the argument for a strategy of “Active of Non-Alignment” for Latin America, which is encapsulated in his latest co-authored book Active Non-Alignment and Latin America: A Doctrine for the New Century. As a vocal proponent of creating what he calls “Non-Aligned 2.0,” Heine discussed his proposed strategy of active non-alignment, what brought about the need for such a strategy, and the importance of regional collaboration in making it a reality.
