Pardee School 2020 Student Awards Announced

[Updated October 3, 2021] The Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University honored the achievements of some of this year’s brightest and most talented students with the presentation of multiple academic awards.

The Carole A. Chandler Student Citizenship Award is the Pardee School’s highest student award and is given each year to recognize the spirit of citizenship and a demonstration of exemplary commitment to the values and mission of the Pardee School of Global Studies.

The 2020 Chandler Citizenship Award was awarded to Akash Chopra (BA; double major in International Relations and in Economics).

The Ambassador Herman Eilts Thesis Awards are given to the best undergraduate and graduate theses written by students at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. The 2020 Eilts Award for the Best Graduate Thesis has been awarded to Amelia Dangerfield (MAIA) for her thesis on “Understanding Incel Violence: Sexual Humiliation as a Risk Factor for Terrorism,” (supervised by Professor Jessica Stern). The 2020 Eilts Award for the Best Undergraduate Honors Thesis is awarded to Stephanie Hince (BA International Relations) for her thesis on “Loja Villonaco: Role of Chinese Finance in Ecuadorian Power Sector” (supervised by Professor Kevin Gallagher).

The Pardee School Academic Excellence Awards are given to graduate and undergraduate students who have demonstrated the highest levels of academic excellence in courses taken at the Pardee School. On the graduate level, the Academic Excellence Award was awarded to Kira Levin (MAIA; Certificate in African Studies). On the undergraduate level, the Academic Excellence award had three recipients: Ava Shen (BA; International Relations, and French Studies), Luis Enrique Moya Canovas (BA; International Relations, and Economics), and Glenn Korman (BA; International Relations).

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Prize for Academic Excellence, is given to the undergraduate student at the Pardee School who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The winner of the 2020 CAS Prize is Amanda Pareja Villegas (BA; International Relations, and Economics).

In announcing the awards, Dean Adil Najam wrote that “while the coronavirus has forced us to change many things this year, we will not change our tradition of celebrating the demonstration of excellence and achievement at the BU Pardee School.” He congratulated the winners and added that “none of these was an easy decision. Yet, reviewing the nominees for these awards is one of the most pleasant and uplifting responsibilities…We look forward to seeing them in person whenever the 2020 Convocation is held, on the other side of COVID-19.”

Student award winners were recognized in person during the Pardee School’s Class of 2020 Recognition Ceremony, held on October 3, 2021. This event brought the Pardee School community back together to finally celebrate last year’s graduates, as their in-person convocation had been delayed due to COVID-19.
