Schmidt Publishes Article on European Economic Governance
Vivien Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published an op-ed in Social Europe discussing the Eurozone Crisis and how the European Union (EU) can reform its economic policies for a brighter future.
In the article, titled “Decentralising and democratising while reforming European economic governance,” Schmidt argues that the EU’s obsession with ‘governing by rules and ruling by numbers’ through the Stability and Growth Pact, focused on low deficit and debts, meant that it had failed to invest in its future. While the COVID-19 pandemic represents a new beginning in eurozone economic policies and governance due to a shift towards green and technology investments, Schmidt argues that the policies need to be reinforced by new instruments to promote EU-wide sustainable development, while the governance needs to be decentralized and democratized.
