Schmidt Dicusses Her New Book with the Bruno Kreisky Forum

Vivien Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, discussed her new book – Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers in the Eurozone – during a video presentation for the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue. The video presentation was in lieu of a scheduled talk at the Forum in Vienna, Austria, which was canceled due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

In her remarks, Schmidt outlines the content of her latest book, which explores the Eurozone crisis and the nature of democratic legitimacy in the European Union. Schmidt discusses the different measures of legitimacy with which to critique European democracy and how different EU institutional actors have strived to improve since the beginning of the crisis. She goes on to point out that many EU actors appear to have learned lessons from the Eurozone crisis in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, but the continued populace revolt that has stemmed from both crises means there is still work to be done to maintain trust throughout the EU.
