CURA Hosts Conference on Muslim Communities in Europe and North America
The Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs (CURA), an affiliated thematic center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a September 27, 2019 conference entitled “Muslim Communities in Europe and North America: Contemporary Developments and Challenges.”
Timothy Longman, CURA Director and Pardee School Associate Professor of International Relations and Political Science, and Jon Mandaville, NAAIMS President and Professor at Portland State University, delivered welcome remarks at the conference.
The conference featured multiple panels on topics including Law, Religion, and Immigration; Religiosity of Western Muslims; Western Muslims in Culture and Higher Education; and Self-Positioning of Western Muslims.
A luncheon keynote address entitled “After Political Violence: The State Regulation of ‘Immigrant Religion’ in Transatlantic Perspective” was delivered by Jonathan Laurence, Professor of Political Science at Boston College. Longman and Mandaville delivered closing remarks at the end of the conference.
Boston University’s Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs (CURA) brings together a multi-disciplinary community of scholars to encourage and support research on the role of religion in public affairs. Established in 1985, CURA is the oldest center for the study of religion and world affairs in the United States. Supported by a substantial endowment and grants from funders such as the Henry Luce Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Bradley Foundation, the Kroc Institute for International Peace, and the Metanexus Foundation, CURA has sponsored over 140 research projects on five continents that have led to the publication of over 145 books.
