Pardee Women’s Group Attends Angela Davis Talk
The Pardee Women’s Group (PWG) at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University attended the February 9, 2019 Angela Davis lecture hosted by the BU Undergraduate Sociology Association. The event was titled, “Angela Davis: Violence Against Women and Its Ongoing Challenge to Racism.”
The Pardee Women’s Group was created to help build and foster relationships between the Pardee School’s female students (inclusive to non-binary students as well as “male allies”), faculty, and greater community through networking events, speaker series, and a variety of volunteer activities. This PWG led initiative to interact with the larger BU community resulted in a dozen PWG members jointly attending the Davis talk proceeded by an after-action conversation.
Though highly controversial, the Angela Davis event spoke to a variety of hot topic issues including the importance of inclusive feminismt, LBGTQ, and anti-capitalist policies. Davis also discussed the importance of female led-initiatives, the power of community, and how gender and race must be viewed through a dynamic, intersectionality-focused lens.
When asked what advice she would give to a younger self, Davis said she wished she had been open to more causes, such as being a vegetarian. She suggested to the audience that they too be more open.
The PWG is a safe-space for all religions, ethnicities, and sexual-identities.
