The Center for the Study of Europe, an affiliated regional center at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted Sheri Berman, Professor of Political Science at Barnard College at Columbia University, for a September 20, 2018 lecture entitled “Populism and the Future of Liberal Democracy in the West.”
The discussion was moderated by Cathie Jo Martin, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University.
Berman analyzed various explanations for growing dissatisfaction with liberal democracy and rising populism in the West, and discussed some of the main causes put forward by scholars and pundits. She also assess the evidence for these various causes, and suggested some ways the research agenda and our understandings of these crucial phenomena can move forward.
Berman’s research interests include European history and politics; the development of democracy; populism and fascism; and the history of the left.
The mission of the Center for the Study of Europe is to promote understanding of Europe through its cultural heritage; its political, economic, and religious histories; its art, literature, music, and philosophy; as well as through its recent emergence as a new kind of international form through the European Union (EU). Operationally, the center provides a focal point and institutional support for the study of Europe across Boston University through coordination of teaching missions, support of research, community-building among faculty and students, and outreach beyond the University.
