Prof. Chehabi on US-Iran Relations
Houchang Chehabi, professor for International Relations and History at The Frederick S. Pardee School for Global Studies at Boston University, spoke with journalists at Heute, an online news outlet in Germany, on relations between the U. S. and Iran.
An excerpt (in German) from the report, published on November 19, 2014, quoting Prof. Chehabi:
Wahrscheinlich helfen IS und iranische Wirtschaftskrise nicht einmal bei den Atomverhandlungen, vermutet Houchang Chehabi, Professor für internationale Beziehungen an der Boston University. “Ich glaube, dass die Hardliner des Regimes ideologisch so verbrämt sind, dass sie einen längeren Konflikt in Kauf nehmen, wenn sie meinen, dass der Westen ihnen etwas aufzwingen möchte”, sagt er.
Chehabi spricht von der “Tragik der US-amerikanisch-iranischen Beziehung”. Wenn die eine Seite sich öffne, sei die andere Seite nicht bereit. Und umgekehrt. “Iran hat bereits zahlreiche Chancen verspielt – und ich bin pessimistisch, dass es dieses Mal anders ist, nur weil man einen gemeinsamen Feind hat.”
