Prof. Schmidt Invited to Keynote in Uruguay & Chile

scProf. Vivien Schmidt of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University was invited to present keynote talks, based on her research, at the annual congresses of the national political science associations of Uruguay and Chile.

Prof. Schmidt is the Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and of Political Science at the Boston University Pardee School of Global Studies and also the Director of its Center for the Study of Europe. Her research focuses on European political economy, institutions, and democracy.

While in Santiago, Chile, Prof. Vivien Schmidt was asked to give a keynote speech at the Chilean Political Science Association annual meetings (October 16, 2014). She spoke on ‘Neo-Institutional Theory and Discursive institutionalism: Explaining Continuity  and Change, Power and Legitimacy.’ Earlier, she had been invited to speak to the annual meeting of the Uruguayan Political Science Association, held at Montevideo (October 9, 2014). Her keynote talk was on ‘The Power of Political Ideas and Discourse.’

While in Latin America, Prof. Schmidt also presented her research at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL). Her presentation at CEPAL focused on ‘The Resilience of Neo-Liberal Ideas in Europe and Beyond: What Impact on Labor and the Welfare State?’
