MET Research Assistant/Teaching Assistant Supervisor Acknowledgement

  • My Research Assistant/Teaching Assistant may only start working after:
    • the MET Deans have approved the position
    • the student reviews their contract and returns signed copy of the agreement to the MET Dean’s Office
    • the student completes required paperwork as outlined by the Student Employment Office (SEO)
  • The start and end date of student appointments are set by the MET Dean’s Office and outlined in the student’s contract. My RA/TA is not permitted to start work prior to the start date or work beyond the end date listed.
  • MET RAs and TAs work in hourly positions and are entitled to weekly employment at the number of hours that are stated in their appointment letters. As a supervisor, I am expected to provide that workload to them each week, and I am also expected to handle the remainder of any other research, grading, or course preparation work that extends beyond the number of hours that are stated in the contract. If my RA/TA works more than their contracted number of hours in a given week, they must deduct that overage from another week during their appointment duration.
  • Students are not expected to work on University holidays or during breaks.
  • If I have reasonable concerns about my RA/TA’s performance, I need to discuss these concerns with them and provide them with the opportunity to make improvements before any disciplinary measures are taken. Any discipline will not impact their student status, unless the actions leading to discipline also constitute a student infraction.

I understand my supervisory responsibilities and MET’s policies regarding Research and Teaching Assistants.
