Station1 Frontiers Fellowship

We invite you to apply to be in the summer 2020 cohort and participate in the Station1 Frontiers Fellowship (SFF) – a unique and exciting residential science and technology-focused educational, research, and internship program with a focus on societal perspective, social innovation and impact.
Station1 Fellows come from near and far to live, work, and learn together throughout the summer for ten weeks in the Greater Boston region of Massachusetts.

As a Station1 Fellow You Will:
- Receive a competitive living expenses stipend, housing costs, a stipend for transportation to and from Station1, commuting transportation costs to and from internships, and instructional costs (all expenses are paid)
- Gain authentic, hands-on experience through an internship in a leading science and technology company or university research laborator
- Participate in exciting, state-of-the-art, team-based research and development projects in science and technology (270 hours
- Engage with a shared curriculum, unique in the nation and the world, focused on socially- directed STEM education and research which draws together critical perspectives on history, social studies of science and technology, equity, inclusion, computation in a social context, social change and innovation, sustainability, and ethics of science and technology (100 hours)
- Gain interdisciplinary experience and mentors by interacting with guest instructors and mentors from a diversity of field
- Gain personal and professional experience through both the internship and a formal curriculum that focuses on areas such as: intercultural knowledge, inclusive leadership and collaboration, multi-modal communication, and more
- Have access to a creative co-working, collaboration, and learning space
- Receive information and guidance on academic and career pathways
- As program alumni, become part of a network of exceptional professionals in the Station1 community beyond completion of the program.

The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship includes frontier science and technology research projects with a social focus – projects that foster thoughtful, responsible, equitable, and ethical development of science and technology fundamentally linked to humanistic concepts and societal concerns. Station1 works closely with accepted applicants to match students to projects in their areas of interest. Station1 offers projects across all STEM majors. Example areas include biotechnology, clean technologies, agricultural technology, civic technology, inclusive social media, advanced manufacturing, 3D printing, and digital automation, autonomous aeronautics, and nanoscale materials design.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Be currently enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree-granting program at an accredited post-secondary institution and in good academic standing;
Have a genuine interest in science and technology applied to social impact;
Be able to reside in Station1-provided housing for the full duration of the program;
Have no other employment (full-time or part-time) for the full duration of the program;
Participate for the entire duration of the program (tentative dates: June 7th – August 16th).
African American, Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander, first-generation students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, students enrolled at minority-serving institutions, teaching institutions, and community colleges are strongly encouraged to apply.
Station1 also strongly encourages students who have not had the opportunity to participate in a previous research, internship, or significant project-based experience to apply.
Station1 encourages students who may have applied previously but were not accepted to apply again as an increased number of fellowships is expected to be available. We have had instances of students who were not accepted on the first application but were accepted subsequently.
While Station1 would like to continue to engage with students from previous cohorts, Station1 alumni are not eligible for future summer program Station1 Fellowships.
