Requesting a Reduced Course Load

If you are considering reducing your course load for any of the permitted circumstances, please follow these steps:

  1. Do not withdraw from any classes below a full course of study until an ISSO advisor has authorized you.
  2. Obtain support documentation that addresses one of the following circumstances:

    Bona fide academic reason
You must provide a letter of recommendation from your academic dean or advisor that clearly describes the academic reason that compels you to reduce your credit load to less than full-time for the current semester.

    Illness or other medical condition
Submit a letter from the physician who is treating you. The letter must be on letterhead and specify the time period recommended for the reduced course load (not more than one year). You must resume a full course of study in the Fall or Spring semester immediately following the recommended period of recovery
  3. Make an appointment to meet with your ISSO advisor to discuss your situation.
  4. Please bring your support documentation, DS-2019 (formerly IAP-66), passport and I-94 card with you to your appointment.

Upon approval, you will receive a letter of authorization from the ISSO verifying your lawful J-1 status during your reduced course load. Keep this letter for your records.
