Requesting Authorization for Medical Leave of Absence

If you are considering a medical leave of absence (LOA), you must follow these steps:

  1. Do not withdraw from any classes below a full course of study or request an LOA from the University until an ISSO advisor has authorized you.
  2. Obtain medical documentation verifying that treatment and/or recovery due to an illness or other medical condition will require you to interrupt your studies at Boston University.  A letter from the doctor who is treating you is preferred and must be on letterhead.  The letter must specify the time period recommended for the interruption of study (not more than one year).
  3. Make an appointment to meet with your ISSO advisor to discuss your situation.
  4. Please bring your medical documentation, DS-2019, passport and I-94 card with you to your appointment.

Upon approval, you will receive a letter of authorization from the ISSO verifying your lawful J-1 status during your medical LOA.  Keep this letter for your records. You must resume a full course of study in the Fall or Spring semester immediately following the recommended period of recovery.

Extension of Medical LOA

If you require additional time beyond the period of your doctor’s original recommendation for interrupting your studies, please follow the above steps to request an extension of authorization from your ISSO advisor.  (NOTE: If you wish to return to classes, but at a reduced course load below full-time, please click here.)
