Why did you choose SHA?

SHA gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion for people and travel while getting a rounded business degree.

What are some of your favorite BU memories?

I loved walking down Comm. Ave from Warren Towers to the SHA building. I also loved taking culinary classes with Chef Noel Cullen. I miss Boston – the people, the culture, the energy, the food – everything.

What was your first full-time job? How did you end up in your current position?

I was hired by Marriott hotels during the SHA interviews and ended up working with Marriott hotels for over 5 years. When the JW Marriott opened up in my home town, I decided to relocate to Michigan and start a family. Unfortunately, I was laid off in 2008 but it was the best thing to ever happen to me because it encouraged me to follow my passion and start a healthy recipe blog. Since 2010, I’ve been blogging at The Lemon Bowl where I have shared over 600 recipes inspired by flavors from around the world.

Please describe your current role. How did your SHA education impact your career?

I am now a business owner and blog full time at The Lemon Bowl. Major food brands from around the world hire me for recipe development, food photography and freelance writing. I’ve enjoyed working for McCormick, Dole, Stonyfield, Blendtec, California Strawberries, Bob’s Red Mill and more.

Since I am self employed, I manage every aspect of my business including accounting, finance, marketing, advertising, communications, social media, technology and much much more. I owe much of my success to my SHA degree.

Any advice for current and prospective students?

Follow your passion. If you aren’t doing what makes you happy, you will never be as successful as you could be following your dream. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Nothing good comes without hard work, blood, sweat and tears.
