Professor Karl Assumes Leadership Role with IEEE

Professor W. Clem Karl, Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected to serve as IEEE’s 2025 Vice President of Publication Services and Products. This role includes a position on the IEEE Board of Directors, as well as Chairship of the Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB). The PSPB is responsible for oversight of all aspects of IEEE publications, including editorial policies and quality standards, acting as the governing body for all IEEE publications. 

IEEE is the nation’s most prominent professional society for electrical engineers, electronics engineers, and related fields. Professor Karl brings years of leadership experience to this new role within the organization, spanning editorial and administrative work with IEEE itself, co-founding a journal, chairing conferences in the field, and of course, his years helming the ECE department through a period of significant growth, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

In his position statement, he comments that “IEEE’s strength is its community, and this community makes IEEE unique among publishers.” As the members of this department can attest, Professor Karl is no stranger to emphasizing the role of community in the achievement of institutional goals and successes.

Professor W. Clem Karl is a fellow of IEEE, AIMBE and BMES. In the past, he has served as Chair of the PSPB Publishing Conduct Committee, Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of the journal Transactions on Computational Imaging, Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Image Processing, and a member of countless organizational committees, conference committees and boards, etc, some of which he also chaired. His research interests center on computational imaging, statistical signal processing, and biomedical signal and image processing.
