Fall 2023 Registration Guidelines
Class of 2026
Rising sophomore registration: Sunday, April 23, 2023
Note: The Student Link home page will transition to the MyBU Student Portal on Monday, March 6. The portal video gives an in-depth walkthrough of the portal’s features. The MyBU Student Portal User Guide provides a step-by-step guide of the portal and it’s features.
Students will use the Student Portal as a new “front door” to log onto the Student Link. All functions currently available on the Student Link (e.g., Registration Planner) will be accessible through the Student Portal.
The Registration Planner for fall 2023 is now available on the MyBU Student Portal.
Step One: Prepare for Registration
Meet with Your CGS Academic Advisor
Schedule a mandatory advising appointment with your CGS academic advisor to discuss the appropriate CGS courses and electives for the fall semester. Your advisor will give you your Academic Advising Code which you will use to unlock the registration tool on the MyBU Student Portal/Student Link. We recommend unlocking the registration tool as soon as you receive your Academic Advising Code. Refer to the registration instructions if you need help in using the Academic Advising Code to unlock the registration tool.
Before your meeting, do your research using the following tools:
- Pathways to a BU Degree and Degree Advice: Review the academic requirements for your intended major
- Undergraduate Bulletin: Learn about program and course offerings in all of the schools and colleges at BU
- Students who wish to apply an Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or any other examination scores should consult with their CGS academic advisor. Please refer to the documents below for further information.
The following AP/IB scores award credit for the noted CGS sophomore courses and HUB units:
| AP/IB Credit | Corresponding CGS Course | HUB Unit(s) |
| AP Biology (Score of 4)* | NS 201 (Biology 1) | SI1 (Scientific Inquiry 1) |
| AP Biology (score of 5) IB Biology Higher Level (score of 5 or above)* |
NS 201 (Biology I) and NS 202 (Human Ecology/Global Ecology) | SI1 and SI2 (Scientific Inquiry I and Scientific Inquiry II) |
| IB Philosophy Higher Level (score of 5 or above) | HU 201 (History of Western Ethics I) and HU2xx (Elective credit only) | PLM (Philosophical Inquiry and Life’s Meaning) |
*Students who have AP/IB or other course credit for Chemistry or Physics should consult with their CGS academic advisor.

Step Two: Plan Your Spring Schedule
The Registration Planner for fall 2023 is now available on the MyBU Student Portal. You will access the planner via the Student Portal, but the process for updating your planner will still take place on Student Link.
Please see the directions below for step-by-step instructions:
- After you login, select the “Registration Planner” tile
- Select “Registration”
- Under “Fall 2023”, select “Reg Options”
- Select “Plan”
- Select “Add” to view class offerings
Plan Your Required CGS Courses
Consult the CGS Required Courses guide and discuss with your CGS academic advisor during your advising appointment. The class numbers for fall 2023 CGS courses are listed below.
- Humanities: CGS HU 201
- Natural Science: CGS NS 201
- Social Sciences: CGS SS 201
Remember:
- Open seats in CGS courses (which designates your team) are determined by your registration time assigned by the BU Registrar’s Office.
- All of your CGS course sections must start with the same letter. This indicates that all of your CGS courses are on the same team.

- When you use the Registration Planner to plan your fall 2023 classes, you will have a mock-up of your fall class schedule and you’ll be ready for registration. You will now access the planner via the Student Portal, but the process for updating your planner will still take place on Student Link. The Planner does not reserve seats in the classes; it is only a tool to plan a schedule.
- Be sure to hit the “Continue Search from” button at the bottom of your search results to view all sections being offered.
- Note the instructions next to the blue pushpins in the course listings! Pay attention to see what the course requires (lecture, discussion, lab). Make sure you have all the components.
- Remember to plan multiple options! Your first choices may not be open. Choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day.
Plan Your Electives
Remember, no time conflicts! Make sure the times of your electives and CGS courses do not overlap. The Boston University class passing time is 15 minutes. This means that you have a 15-minute interval between classes. This is not a class conflict.
- Remember to hit the “Continue Search from” button at the bottom of your search results to view all sections being offered.
- Make sure to add all required components of classes (lecture, discussion, lab, pre-lab) if needed. Please note that your elective classes do not need to start with the same letter as your CGS course sections.
- Remember to plan multiple options! The first class you choose may not work with your CGS required courses and choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day. Use the Planner option on the Student Link to create a draft of your schedule. Refer to the registration instructions for guidance on using the Planner tool.
CGS SY201: The CGS Sophomore-Year Experience
- CGS SY201 is a 1.0-credit, pass-fail sophomore-year experience course offered in the fall semester. Led by a CGS Academic Advisor, SY201 introduces students to high-impact educational experiences and opportunities that will allow them to make the most of their time at BU by utilizing the many resources and support networks that the University offers.
- This course is a great way to make new, meaningful connections, learn more about the University, and form a plan for success for your time at BU and beyond.
Step Three: Note Your Registration Date and Time
Check the MyBU Student Portal/Student Link to confirm you are in compliance for registration. After logging in, select Compliance Status on the My Academics page. For more information, please read the Requirements for Registration.
