Adopting Sophia
Adopting a child from China isn’t easy and it isn’t quick, but it is joyous. BU Today asked Laura De Veau to describe the two years of hope, anxiety, and wonder that led to her recent adoption of a baby girl.
In a video for BU Today, De Veau (CGS’87, COM’89, Wheelock’95), assistant director of student and staff development in the Office of Residence Life, talks about finally receiving the call from her adoption agency: “In the middle of the GSU, I literally stood up on a chair and shouted, ‘I’ve got a daughter from China!’” She shares her goals and fears and offers advice on what not to say to adopting parents. “I can’t wait to experience life with Sophia,” she says, “seeing things through her eyes.” Click here to watch part two, in which Laura and husband, Shawn (LAW’94), talk about how Sophia has changed their lives.
