Adopting Sophia

Part one: “I’ve got a daughter from China!”

6

Adopting a child from China isn’t easy and it isn’t quick, but it is joyous. BU Today asked Laura De Veau to describe the two years of hope, anxiety, and wonder that led to her recent adoption of a baby girl.

In the video above, De Veau (CGS’87, COM’89, SED’95), assistant director of student and staff development in the Office of Residence Life, talks about finally receiving the call from her adoption agency: “In the middle of the GSU, I literally stood up on a chair and shouted, ‘I’ve got a daughter from China!’” She shares her goals and fears and offers advice on what not to say to adopting parents. “I can’t wait to experience life with Sophia,” she says, “seeing things through her eyes.”

Click here to watch part two, in which Laura and husband, Shawn (LAW’94), talk about how Sophia has changed their lives.

    A very personal approach

Hooray for BU Today for including a video interview on this subject! It’s an incredibly personal journey and a first-person interview with the De Veaus makes it so much more emotionally charged.

Glad to see BU embracing new media this way; I’m looking forward to seeing other ways it’s put to use.

    Great job BU Today!

I am thrilled to see something of this sort featured on BU Today. It has allowed students, and others who subscribe to this newsletter to get a closer, more personal look at the “powers that be” on campus. I hope to see more features of this sort on BU Today in the future.

And of course, I cannot wait to see the next part(s) of this interview with the DeVeaus!

As a adoptive mother who works at BU, I am glad to see this article. Adoption is a great way to build a family.

    That day in the GSU

I was there last semester in the GSU when you got the call. I heard the screams and me and my friends thought it was awesome that your dream came true. Congrats!

    Adoption Assistance for Employees

This is a great story, and I agree that adoption is a great way to build a family. As BU looks to improve employee benefits, we should look at MIT’s new adoption assistance program. http://hrweb.mit.edu/benefits/adoption/index.html
