Services for Law Alumni
Registration & Building Access
We look forward to having you visit the library. Circulation staff and legal information librarians are here to assist you in finding materials and making your research productive.
Upon arriving, please visit the Fineman Circulation desk with your alumni card to register for law library use. Staff will update your record to reflect your new status and confirm your address and contact phone number. Upon registration, law alumni may use all Boston University libraries and selected law library computing areas. Please note you will still need to sign in at the Fineman Circulation desk each time you visit the library.
Boston University provides generous library privileges to alumni. Other institutions offer limited privileges and therefore we are unable to provide access to libraries outside BU.
Researchers conducting research on behalf of registered law alumni may gain access to the law library by presenting a letter on the alumni’s letterhead stating the dates of use and the general scope of the research.
Proxy access is restricted to the Fineman and Pappas library areas.
The Redstone Building hours are 7AM to 11PM. A card swipe entry system is in place from 8PM to midnight. Alumni who need access after 8pm should contact the facilities manager at 617/358-2300 to obtain a card. Please note, all areas of the library may not be available for alumni use during our restricted access periods. Please see our restricted access policy for more information.
Registered alumni have borrowing privileges at all of the University libraries. Please note that interlibrary loan policies do not allow alumni to request materials not held at Boston University.
Remote Access to Your Borrowing Record
Registered alumni can be setup with a password to access their account remotely. Please ask at any circulation desk.
Most libraries, including law, circulate general materials for 30 days. Reserve, research, journals and other non-circulating materials may be used on-site only.
All the Law Library’s KIC scanners allow users to scan library materials, save directly to wireless devices, a USB key or send scanned pages to email accounts. Automatic document feeds (ADFs) scan both single and double-sided documents. Using the KIC Scanner
The Book Scan station can save to a USB key or send scanned pages to email accounts.

eResources for Alumni
The library licenses resources from hundreds of providers. Most resources are available on campus to law alumni. Please visit the Pappas Circulation Desk to borrow a temporary password for on campus access to electronic resources. Due to licensing restrictions, these databases are not available remotely to alumni.
An alphabetical list of databases and subject guides to electronic resources provide access to products licensed by the law school. For non-legal materials, the BU Libraries maintain similar lists of databases.
LexisAdvance, Westlaw and Bloomberg Law may be accessed at any law library computer by alumni using their own passwords, but due to licensing restrictions we are unable to provide passwords to alumni.
