The Writing Program normally does not permit students to over-enroll in full classes or add a WR class after the early WR add deadline. Maintaining a smaller class size is essential for seminar-style writing courses, and it may be difficult to make up missed work if students join late. If you have an extenuating circumstance that makes it necessary for you to take a full CAS WR class or to add a class after the WR add deadline, you may submit the petition form below. Both the Writing Program and the instructor must approve your petition. Instructors may choose not to take any extra or late students. If your petition is approved, the Writing Program will register you for the class.

Interest in a particular topic or instructor is not considered to be an extenuating circumstance. Here are a few examples of circumstances that do qualify as extenuating: you need a religious accommodation; you have medical or disability accommodation needs; you have very limited time availability to take a WR class because you are also working or are a student athlete; you are an international student dealing with visa issues; or you will be a senior and need to take the class in order to graduate on time. Other circumstances may also qualify.

We strongly recommend you list more than one class option and options with different instructors if possible. If you are petitioning to add a WR class after the add deadline, we recommend that you petition for classes that have open seats if possible. Instructors are more likely to approve your late add petition if you won’t also be an extra student.
