Melanie S. Smith has a mixed educational background in public health and the arts. She is an emerging writer with essays published in Ruminate, Birdcoat Quarterly, and The Common, among others. Her courses include Ethical Missteps in Public Health, which addresses racism in medicine; and Every Life, A Story, which examines memoir and personal essay. She has done some research on students’ fear of failure and has cheered the success of students whose essays have appeared in WR, the journal of the College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program.
