Biography

Amirah Fadhlina (she/her/hers) is a PhD candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology. Her work focuses on the intersections of identity, new media, gender, and religion in Indonesia, with a particular emphasis on queer and gender nonconforming communities in Yogyakarta. Combining ethnographic fieldwork, media analysis, and archival research, her dissertation explores how people across generations navigate visibility and create alternative spaces within a Muslim-majority society. Outside of academia, Amirah is a big movie buff, especially when it comes to horror and thrillers. In 2025, she was a programmer for the SWANA program at Wicked Queer, Boston’s annual LGBTQ+ film festival. She also enjoys playing music and going on long runs in her free time.
