Ideas for Major DME Assignments
The signature approach of WR 152 is the remediation of a student’s research paper into a new genre and mode, and there is multimodality present throughout the entire course. Major DME assignments might include creating websites, Ted-style talks, zines, podcasts, movies, and many other forms.
Here are a sampling of student DME projects from a single Spring 2021 section of WR 152, just to get you thinking about some possibilities:
- African American Vaccine Hesitancy: How to Educate Medical Professionals (virtual museum exhibit)
- Antinormative Pedagogy (Twitter)
- The Economic Effects of Representation in Economics Academia (podcast)
- Underrepresented students and STEM (Adobe Spark)
- Women in medical careers (Digication/Tiktok)
- Black and Latinx students in Computer Science (children’s book)
- Racism and Astrophysics (Adobe Spark)
- Women in Political Science (TikTok)
Ideas for Minor (Low Stakes) DME Assignments
Low-stakes DME assignments should be frequent, and present throughout the course. You may use photo annotations, picture prompts (including memes, social media photos, advertisements, and/or news photographs), visual schema, or other interactive, collaborative, multimodal activities to reinforce both the course content/themes and your section’s targeted DME skills.
