Writing Support for Students

Stay informed about BU’s writing centers and other sources of support for student writers.

CAS Writing Center

The College of Arts and Sciences Writing Center offers one-on-one writing consultations primarily to students working on assignments for CAS Writing Program (WR) courses. Students can also make appointments for assistance with assignments for most other courses that fulfill the First-Year Writing and Writing, Research, & Inquiry Hub units. Of those other courses, consultants are trained to support students in CAS, CGS, and KHC courses; support is not offered for QST courses that fulfill the Hub requirements listed above. Students in these courses may sign up for appointments in advance here; in-person and remote appointments are available, and students can book one appointment per week. Students working on papers for other CAS classes may also request same-day appointments using this form. Consultants assist students at any stage in the writing process and can help with both traditional academic essays as well as alternate genre, oral/signed, digital/multimedia, and creativity/innovation projects. Consultants also receive specialized training for supporting English language learner (ELL) students.

Writing in the Disciplines: Tutoring

Tutoring Writing in the Disciplines (TWID), an initiative funded by BU’s Digital Learning & Innovation and the College of Arts & Sciences, provides support to student writers through department-based peer writing tutors. TWID writing tutors offer both face-to-face and online tutoring options for undergraduate students in several CAS academic units. Working together with departmental faculty and administrators, the Associate Director of Writing in the Disciplines coordinates the logistics and offers training to the peer tutors. Currently, TWID writing tutors are based in History, History of Art & Architecture, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Sociology, and World Languages & Literature. To learn more about this program, contact Associate Director for Writing in the Disciplines, David Shawn. Students can sign up for appointments here.

COM Writing Center

The College of Communications Writing Center sees its mission as assisting writers at every step of the writing process, from brainstorming to revising. Students working on writing for any course or project are welcome to bring their work to the COM Writing Center for an individual appointment. ELL specialists are also available. Reserve an appointment here.

ERC Writing Assistance

The Educational Resource Center Writing Assistance Program offers individual writing consultations to BU students, faculty, staff, and alumni working on any type of writing, at any stage in the writing process. The ERC will also help with strategies for time management, outlining, and editing/proofreading. Appointments may be reserved ahead of time here. The ERC also offers graduate student writing support, which you can read more about here.
