Director, Kilachand Honors College – Call for Nominations and Applications
From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer
and Dr. Amie Grills, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs
The Office of the Provost invites nominations and applications from the BU professoriate for the position of director of Kilachand Honors College. The director provides leadership for all aspects of this innovative, interdisciplinary University-wide program serving over 400 of Boston University’s undergraduates. The director of Kilachand Honors College also holds the title of Arvind and Chandan Nandlal Kilachand Professor, reflecting the leadership and standard of scholarship, research, or creative activity the director brings to the position. The director reports to the associate provost for undergraduate affairs and oversees a collaborative team of faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows.
Kilachand Honors College was founded in 2011 and provides students a challenging program grounded in the processes of exploration and discovery, combining curricular with co-curricular education in a residential community setting in Kilachand Hall. Students enroll in Kilachand Honors College, as well as in a degree program in one of the undergraduate schools or colleges. The Kilachand program is designed to encourage students to explore interdisciplinary approaches and creative ways of thinking as integral parts of their degrees. Within the context of a large, urban research university, Kilachand offers students experiences typically associated with features of a small liberal arts college. These include frequent, informal interaction with faculty and staff whose offices are in Kilachand Hall and an intellectual community of students from across schools and colleges who live together and take the same courses.
The next director of Kilachand Honors College will have the opportunity to build on the tremendous successes achieved in the reimagining of the college over the past five years. Through intellectual leadership and collaborative problem solving in an environment of shared decision-making, the director will oversee all aspects of the program, including: admissions and recruitment, curriculum and co-curriculum development, collaboration with the other schools and colleges in the selection of faculty, advising of students, managing and developing staff, and budget.
Competitive candidates will have:
- Excellent scholarly credentials;
- A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education;
- Experience in a significant administrative role that includes budgetary oversight;
- Expertise designing innovative courses or curricula;
- The ability to articulate the essence and values of Kilachand Honors College to prospective students and parents and to the BU community;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different academic fields and with administrative units around the University; and
- A commitment to creating and sustaining a vibrant, diverse community of students, staff, and faculty.
Candidates should hold the rank of full professor, and applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The appointment is a full-time, 12-month, three-year renewable term, beginning July 1, 2023. Applications should include a C.V.; a letter of application addressing the candidate’s interest in and qualifications for the position; and names, email addresses and phone numbers of at least three references.
Please submit nominations and applications to Kristen Vellinga in the Office of the Provost (vellinga@bu.edu). For best consideration, all application materials must be received by January 27, 2023. Confidential review of applications will begin January 30, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
For inquiries about the position, please contact Amie Grills, associate provost for undergraduate affairs (agrills@bu.edu).
