Scheduling of Final Exams

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

As we begin a new semester, I would like to remind everyone that, per University policy, the final examination for a course must be given only during its scheduled exam period and time slot and not during a regular class meeting or on a reading day, even if the faculty member and all students in a course agree to such a change.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that our students have the appropriate time and space to prepare for finals during the designated study period. For further information regarding the scheduling of final exams, please see the website of the University Registrar (http://www.bu.edu/reg/calendars/final-exams/policy/).

With the continuation of Learn from Anywhere (LfA) for the spring 2021 semester, the University Registrar provides these additional reminders:

  • Fully remote classes must offer fully remote exams.
  • LfA classes must have an option for students who are remote at the time of the exam to take the exam remotely. Being mindful of time zone differences is very helpful.
  • Please note that there are few rooms that can accommodate faculty combining multiple sections of courses or classes into one time slot if the seating is physically distanced.
  • Finally, given that there are many circumstances beyond our control during the pandemic, it is best to be prepared to offer any exam remotely, in the event of a change in circumstances.

I want to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this effort – particularly as we navigate this extraordinary academic year – and to wish everyone a productive, successful, and healthy spring semester ahead.
