Branding Guidelines
Logo Usage
- Always use the official Boston University logo (University plate) for external communications and when events are open to the public
- For internal-only materials, you may use the BU icon
- Ensure proper spacing around the logo, equal to the logo’s height on all sides
- Place the logo in the bottom-right corner of flyers and materials
Center and Unit Identification
- Always include “Pardee School of Global Studies” in your materials
- Your specific center or unit should be listed below Pardee School
- Use bold text for Pardee School and regular text for your center/department
Co-Branding
- For events with 2-5 BU entities, use a combined logo lockup. Consult with the communications office and they can request specific logos
- For more than 5 entities, use the University plate and list entities as text
- When collaborating with external organizations, place their logos to the left of BU’s logo and use the university plate
Color Scheme
- Primary Colors:
- BU Red (official University color): #CC0000
- Black: #2D2926
- Pardee School Teal: #37AEB3
- Usage:
- Use BU Red for primary branding elements and to maintain consistency with the broader University brand.
- Typography can either be black or white, whichever allows them to best be read on the branded materials.
- Incorporate Pardee School Teal as a secondary color to distinguish Pardee School materials within the BU ecosystem. The teal color can be used for accents, backgrounds, or secondary design elements to create a unique Pardee School feel
Typography
- Whitney is BU’s designated font for any marketing materials. Request and download Whitney here.
Note: Our color palette is evolving
Flyer Design Best Practice
- Keep it simple and uncluttered
- Use a clear hierarchy of information (headline, key details, supporting info)
- Stick to one main focal point or message
- Use bullet points for easy readability
- Ensure there’s enough white space to let the design “breathe”
- Limit text to essential information only
- Use no more than 2-3 fonts on a single flyer
- Ensure font sizes are large enough to read from a distance
- Use high-quality, relevant images or graphics
- Include a clear call to action (e.g., “Register Now”, “Learn More”)
- Place the BU logo in the bottom-right corner
- Wordmarks should not be used in flyers, only within the content of a website.
- If using QR codes, place them in the bottom-left corner, balancing size with the BU logo
- Remove “www.” from URLs
Social Media Best Practices
- Share a mix of content: events, research highlights, faculty spotlights, student stories, etc.
- Use a consistent voice that aligns with Pardee School’s brand
- Use high-quality images and graphics
- Tag relevant accounts such as @BUPardeeSchool in all posts
- Tag BU Experts on relevant platforms when sharing faculty research or expert commentary
- Use relevant hashtags to increase visibility, including #BUPardeeSchool
- Aim for 3-5 posts per week to maintain an active presence
- Share content across different platforms, adapting as needed
Appspace Best Practices
- Know your Appspace channel: 121 BSR (for student, faculty, alumni, staff, and administrative content), 152 BSR (for student, faculty, and alumni content), and 156 BSR (for student, faculty, and alumni content)
- Prioritize Pardee-centered content, including student achievements, faculty research and media mentions, staff updates, events, and school-wide announcements
- Promote important events and deadlines such as study abroad applications, fellowships, scholarships, and student organization activities
- Use Canva Presentation format (16:9 ratio, 1920 × 1080 px) for optimal display on Appspace screens
- Keep slides clear and easy to read from a distance, use concise messaging, large fonts, strong contrast, and safe margins
- Double-check all the QR codes, email addresses, and contact information before sending in Appspace creatives
Website Headers
- Ensure your center’s website includes “Pardee School of Global Studies” in the header and maintain consistency with other Pardee School center websites
Wordmarks & Special Graphics
- A “wordmark” is a singular design that combines both typography and a graphic to represent an entity, program, or organization. These are not “logos” and should not be used as branding.
- These elements must only be used within content on the website and in flyers, and not alongside Boston University branding or as part of any co-branded materials.
- Consult with the communications office first if you want to create a special wordmark or graphic for an event or program.
See these examples of wordmarks used correctly within branded materials:
