In a January 8, 2024 long-form interview with Business Recorder, Adil Najam, Dean Emeritus and Professor at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies and President of WWF-International, shared insights into climate policy and adaptation. Najam emphasized the critical importance of both mitigation and adaptation strategies in addressing climate change effectively.
Reflecting on the urgency of climate action, Najam stated,
“You cannot mitigate your way out of impacts after they have happened.”
This underscores the interconnectedness of mitigation and adaptation, highlighting their indispensable roles in addressing climate change.
Regarding adaptation measures, Najam discussed their potential to enhance resilience and drive sustainable development. He explained,
“Adaptation is an opportunity to give people space and the ability to make more resilient decisions.”
By prioritizing adaptation strategies, countries like Pakistan can address climate risks and promote socio-economic progress.
Najam also addressed the aftermath of the 2022 monsoon floods in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive response to climate-related disasters. He urged policymakers to prioritize climate justice and resilience-building efforts, stating,
“The impact of floods is still not over for those who lost their homes and livelihoods, but it is lost from our collective memories.”
Throughout the interview, Najam’s commitment to environmental advocacy and sustainable development resonated strongly. His insights underscored the importance of holistic approaches to climate action, grounded in science, equity, and community engagement.
