Heine Comments on Priorities for Chile’s New Government

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently featured in the Latin America Advisor, a publication of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington D.C. think tank.
Heine responded to the publication’s feature Q&A, which asked about the outlook and prospects for the new Chilean government under President Gabriel Boric. He joined fellow Latin America experts in addressing questions including what issues are most pressing for Chile, what should Boric’s top priorities be as he assumes the presidency, can Chile’s new president forge a
path of economic growth while keeping his election promises of greater wealth distribution, and more.
In his comments, Heine notes that if Chile is to chart a new path forward, it must distinguish between urgent and important issues. In addition, he stresses that Boric and his government must maintain a good relationship with the constitutional convention. Heine argues that the country desperately needs a modern constitutional charter for the digital age and the process of drafting that should not be driven by identity politics.
