Heine Offers Thoughts on Argentina Joining China’s BRI
Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was featured in the Latin America Advisor – a publication of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington D.C. think tank – discussing the impact of Argentina aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Heine responded to the publication’s feature Q&A, which asked, “what will Argentina gain from more Chinese investment?” He stated that it is no surprise that Argentina joined the BRI as 21 other Latin American countries are already a part of it. In addition, Heine said that increased Chinese foreign investment in the region is not well received in the United States; however, it fills a critical vacuum as the U.S. has not prioritized investments in Latin America as China has.
