Heine Discusses Chinese Foreign Investment & Trade in Chile

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a La Tercera article discussing China’s rising dominance as the largest foreign investor in Chile and how officials view this relationship.

The article, titled “Chinese offensive in Chile raises first alarms,” describes how many Chilean government officials have applauded China’s investment in the country while others have expressed concern over a foreign company’s ownership of the country’s electricity distribution clients. China has been Chile’s number one trading partner for ten years, and for the past two years has also become Chile’s number one source of foreign direct investment.

Heine, former ambassador of Chile to China, found the concern over Chinese investment curious. He noted that the country’s electricity sector was privatized under the military government – a move that was applauded wildly. However, he said that a strange concern has arisen now that Chinese companies are investing so heavily in a private industry.
