Student Spotlight: Riley Awarded Boren Scholarship

Noah Riley (Pardee/Kilachand ’21) received a Boren Scholarship to study in Beijing and Shanghai from June through December 2019 where he will be participating in the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP) at Tsinghua University.

The program, run in conjunction with Stanford University, is designed to facilitate advanced Mandarin competency for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals. Riley will then spend the fall semester in the BU-Shanghai internship program at Fudan University.

Riley is a double major International Relations and Economics at BU, with concentrations in Asia and foreign policy/security studies. After graduation, he says he is interested in pursuing a career as a member of the national security community, specifically related to future U.S.-China relations.

The Boren Scholarship, an initiative sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) is a national, competitive program that provides U.S. undergraduate students funding opportunities to study languages in world regions deemed critical to U.S. national security. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Riley said he is honored and humbled to have received this award, which will enable him to further his study of Chinese language, culture, and politics — a region of the world that has fascinated him since childhood. He said he is particularly appreciative of the Pardee faculty and staff, as well as the BU Office of Fellowships and Scholarships for helping make this possible.
