GDP Center Hosts Workshop on China’s Belt and Road Initiative
The Global Development Policy (GDP) Center, an affiliated center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a March 29, 2018 workshop with members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute for World Economics and Politics on China’s overseas energy investment.
Zhang Ming and Yongzhong Wang, of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute for World Economics and Politics, joined GDP Center Director Kevin P. Gallagher for the discussion on China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Since its initiation by China’s President Xi Jinping in 2013,the Belt and Road Initiative has received 55.9 percent of China’s total overseas energy finance since 2000. The group discussed the geopolitical implications and the risks involved with the projects led by China as well as the macroeconomic implications of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The discussion also focused on the current circumstances, risks, and challenges of China’s overseas investment and finance in the Belt and Road region.
The GDP Center is a university-wide research center in partnership with the Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. The GDP Center’s mission is to advance policy-oriented research for financial stability, human well-being, and environmental sustainability.
