Prof. Gallagher Quoted in Forbes on China in Latin America
A Forbes.com post titled “As US Sleeps, China Conquers Latin America” (October 15, 2014) cites the research of Prof. Kevin Gallagher of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies to argue that the United States should be very concerned about China’s growing share of and influence in Latin America.
The Forbes.com articles quotes the 2010 book The Dragon in the Room: China and the Future of Latin America, by Kevin P. Gallagher and Roberto Porzecanski, to point out that “Ninety-two percent of manufacturing exports from Latin American were in sectors where China was increasing its market share while the region was decreasing its share, or where the share was increasing for both sides but at a slower rate in Latin America.”
Prof. Gallagher has been a frequent commentator on this subject and is also quoted in the Forbes story:
As commodity prices slide and the terms of trade decline, the lack of ability of Latin America’s manufacturers to compete with their Chinese counterparts poses a real threat to the long run growth of the region.
