Schilde & Cappella Receive Grant on Political Economy of Security
Assistant Professor Kaija Schilde of the Frederick S. Pardee School for Global Studies, Assistant Professor Rosella Cappella Zielinski of the Political Science Department – both at Boston University – and Professor Norrin Ripsman of Concordia University have received a venture grant to support innovative and pioneering research from the International Studies Association (ISA).
The grant will be used to hold a one day workshop at the next annual ISA conference, to be held at New Orleans in March 2015. The workshop will feature 26 scholars from around the globe studying political economy of security. The goal of the workshop is to revisit and revise the study of national security in light of the major events in the past decade including economic crisis, austerity measures, and increased financial globalization. This economic climate has had serious ramifications for the ability of states to project military power, finance conflicts, and resolve disputes. We will emphasize five key areas of study: defense spending and the defense industrial base, war finance, the economic consequences of war, economic statecraft and financial warfare, and economics of peacemaking.
The workshop in New Orleans will provide the starting point for a forthcoming speaker series and workshop at the Pardee School titled the Project for the Study of Political Economy of Security.
