On April 13, 2026, Jim Schantz created Skyscape in response to a live performance of Krása’s String Quartet during a Yom HaShoah memorial presented by the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies and the Terezín Music Foundation.
In recognition of Yom Hashoah, the Elie Wiesel Center and Terezín Foundation held Remembrance and Creativity, a seventy-five minute program honoring the artistic spirit of three extraordinary composers — Gideon Klein, Sigmund Schul and Hans Krása — who perished in the Holocaust. Through music, prayer, visual art, and reflection, the program explored the enduring power of creativity as a force of hope, resistance, and transformation.
After remarks from Mark Ludwig, interspersed with music performed by the Terezín Music Foundation Ensemble, artist Jim Schantz painted alongside the ensemble’s music to create a powerful visual interpretation of hope in the midst of pain and tragedy.
