Our beloved colleague Prof. Michael Alan Grodin, MD, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2023.

Michael Grodin was a world-renowned medical ethicist who served as Professor of Health Law, Policy, and Management in the School of Public Health at Boston University, as well as Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. In addition to his responsibilities as a professor and a much sought-after therapist for trauma victims, Michael Grodin was a founding member of the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies. He will be missed as a beloved colleague and a mentor to generations of graduate and undergraduate students. He directed the Project on Ethics and the Holocaust, providing close mentorship and co-publishing opportunities for our students, and his course on Jewish bioethics and the Holocaust was a mainstay of our program. Professor Grodin was also a founding member and inspiration for our program in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies.

Michael Grodin was close to Professor and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, with whom he shared a deep commitment to carrying forward the memory of the Holocaust in the spirit of Jewish prophetic ethics. We want to build on this legacy and ask you to help us by supporting a scholarship fund and other projects we are establishing in Michael’s name, so his legacy may reach the next generation of students. We are grateful to Michael’s family for their support of this initiative.
