Quick Tips
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
UROP facilitates undergraduate participation in faculty-mentored research projects on campus.
- Offers a wide variety of programming and funding types to facilitate research projects in every academic department across the university, including Engineering.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
The National Science Foundation funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program.
- An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution, which is typically not the student’s home university.
- Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel.
- Search for an REU site to find an opportunity that matches your interests!
- Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. A contact person and contact information is listed for each site.
Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP)
Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at one of the NIH’s more than 1150 laboratories/research groups.
- Internships generally cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students arriving at the NIH in June.
- SIP labs and research groups are located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD, and in the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Phoenix, AZ.
- SIP offers resources to guide you through the application process including a YouTube video, FAQs, and suggestions for creating a successful SIP application.
