ASM Materials Experience 2025 with BU MSE

Boston University Materials Science and Engineering was proud to once again host the ASM Materials Experience this year, welcoming 34 high school students from across eastern Massachusetts to explore the world of materials science and engineering. Organized by the Boston and Central MA chapters of ASM International, this free, one-day event provided students with the opportunity to delve into hands-on experiments, explore state-of-the-art labs, and discover careers in STEM.

Throughout the day, students rotated through seven hands-on learning modules, including shape-memory alloys, cryogenics, 3D printing, microscopy, materials testing, metal forming, and corrosion & batteries.

“It has continued to be a fun and rewarding event that I look forward to each year,” said Jese Clinton, who led the cryogenics module. “Materials Science is so interesting and I LOVE sharing some of the weird things that can happen when to materials when you get them (really) cold. The cryogenics demos can be unexpected, loud, and occasionally tasty and I usually have no shortage of volunteers to come up in front of the group to put on a pair of gloves and smash something.”

Parents also shared positive feedback: “We truly appreciate the opportunity our daughter had to attend the Boston University ASM Materials Science Experience New England you hosted. It has been a valuable experience that challenged her academically while fostering her curiosity and passion for science. The hands-on activities and expert guidance helped deepen her understanding and inspired her to pursue her goals with greater confidence.” said Noelle Mellouk.

Joseph, a sophomore at Groton Dunstable High School, added, “At the ASM Materials Science Experience, I completed several fun learning experiments and gained new insights into many scientific concepts. It was neat to make connections between concepts I learned about in high school classes and experiments that I completed at the event. Completing the program reinforced my interest in pursuing a STEM field in college. The ASM team was knowledgeable and made the day really enjoyable for students. I would highly recommend this program to other students!”

“We give the students a peek into the world of materials science and engineering, things that they do not typically see in HS science class, with the goal of showing how important the study and engineering of materials has become to humanity and the excitement that comes from advancing these technologies,” said Chris Craven, ASM event lead.

The event would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support and participation of the MSE GSA! Programs like ASM Materials Experience play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of engineers, and we look forward to hosting again next year.
