BME Grad Program Holds #9 in 2021 US News Rankings
Boston University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering continues to hold the #9 position nationally among the top engineering schools for graduate biomedical / bioengineering degrees, according to U.S. News & World Report. Chosen by the department chairs of peer institutions, BU BME’s new position represents an advance in the newly-released 2021 rankings of the country’s best graduate schools.
This ranking reflects the high esteem that department chairs around the country have for BU’s PhD program. Outstanding factors included BME’s distinguished faculty achievements, the new NSF Engineering Research Center and the $100M Kilachand Endowment for new initiatives at the intersection of engineering and life sciences.
Kenneth Lutchen, dean of ENG, says the ranking of his school’s biomedical engineering program is gratifying, as it has “some of the most sensational and impactful faculty in the world in terms of scholarship, funding, PhD productivity, and national leadership. The nation’s [biomedical engineering] program leaders clearly are aware.”
US News says its rankings are based on “expert opinions about program excellence” and statistical measures of faculty, research, and student quality. Among the tools for gathering that data is a reputation survey sent to more than 22,000 academics and professionals in the various disciplines. U.S. News weighs factors such as reputation, research activity and student selectivity to rank the top graduate engineering schools.
