Spring 2026 Course Planning Guidelines
Class of 2028
Sophomore registration: Friday, November 14, 2025
Step One: Understand the Big Picture
Read the registration instructions below and prepare for registration accordingly.
- Advising Holds: CGS Sophomores will not have an Advising Hold on their student account and thus may register for courses without meeting with their academic advisor. CGS Advising still strongly encourages students to consult with their CGS academic advisor for guidance on spring course selection.
- CGS Program Requirements: Students should prioritize completing their remaining CGS Requirements in the Spring of the sophomore year. Please consult the CGS Curriculum page and your CGS academic advisor to ensure all requirements are met by the end of the sophomore year.
- Major Requirements: Please consult your CGS academic advisor, the CGS Academic Pathways, and the BU Bulletin for guidance on major requirements. Class selections that differ from the CGS Academic Pathways may impact your progress toward a degree.
- Advanced Credits: Students who wish to apply an Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or any other examination scores should consult with their CGS academic advisor. Please refer to the documents below for further information.
The following AP/IB scores award credit for the noted CGS sophomore courses and HUB units:
| AP/IB Credit | Corresponding CGS Course | HUB Unit(s) |
| AP Biology (Score of 4)* | NS 201 (Biology 1) | SI1 (Scientific Inquiry 1) |
| AP Biology (score of 5) IB Biology Higher Level (score of 5 or above)* |
NS 201 (Biology I) and NS 202 (Human Ecology/Global Ecology) | SI1 and SI2 (Scientific Inquiry I and
Scientific Inquiry II) |
| IB Philosophy Higher Level (score of 5 or above) | HU 201 (History of Western Ethics I) and HU2XX (Elective credit only)** | PLM (Philosophical Inquiry and Life’s
Meaning) |
*Students who have AP/IB credit in Chemistry or Physics should consult with their CGS academic advisor.
*Please note that HU 2XX offers elective credit that does not exempt students from CGS HU 202.

Step Two: Note Your Compliance Status, Registration Date and Time
Check the “Holds” tile on MyBU Student to confirm that you do not have any compliance holds on your account. A compliance hold may prevent a student from accessing course registration (example: “Advising Hold” will prevent you from registering for classes and can only be removed by your CGS advisor.
Registration for sophomores opens on Friday, November 14, 2025. Registration for first year students opens on Friday, November 21, 2025. Registration appointment times have been assigned based on the last digit of your BUID number. Note: Students with class conflicts during their assigned registration time will be adjusted.

Please note that space in a particular CGS team is not guaranteed. Students who are unable to register for a desired CGS team should select a different team that fits with their elective.
Step Three: Plan Your Spring Schedule
Plan Your Required CGS Courses
Consult the CGS Required Courses guide and discuss with your CGS academic advisor during your advising appointment. The class numbers for Spring 2025 CGS courses are listed below.
- Humanities: CGS HU 202
- Natural Science: CGS NS 202
- Social Sciences: CGS SS 202
Remember:
- All your CGS course sections must start with the same letter! This indicates that all of your CGS courses are on the same team. Students who register incorrectly for their CGS courses will need to adjust their schedules accordingly in order to complete course registration.
- Correct CGS course registration:
- CGS NS202 SS (lecture) and S1 (lab)
- CGS HU202 SS (lecture) and S3 (discussion)
- Incorrect CGS course registration:
- CGS NS202 WW (lecture) and W1 (lab)
- CGS SS202 TT (lecture) and T3 (discussion)
- Correct CGS course registration:
- Remember to plan multiple options! Your first choices may not be open. Choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day.
Plan Your Electives
Please note that the Boston University class passing time is 15 minutes. This means that all students have a 15-minute interval between classes. Scheduling courses back-to-back is not considered a time conflict.
- Please note that your elective classes do not need to start with the same letter as your CGS course sections.
- Remember to plan multiple options! The first class you choose may not work with your CGS required courses and choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day. Use the Schedule Builder function on MyBU Student before registration begins to plan your classes.
Step Four: Register for Classes
- Prior to your registration date, be sure to check MyBU Student to confirm you are still in compliance for registration.Use the Schedule Builder on MyBU Student before registration begins to plan your classes. In preparation for class registration, students should closely review the following instructional videos, which further explain how to register for classes in MyBU Student:
