Fall 2025 Registration Guidelines
Class of 2028
Rising sophomore registration: Sunday, April 27, 2025
Step One: Meet with Your CGS Academic Advisor
Schedule a mandatory advising appointment with your CGS academic advisor to discuss the appropriate CGS courses and electives for the fall term. After speaking with your academic advisor and confirming your fall course plans, your advisor will remove your “Advising Hold” which will allow you to register for courses on the MyBU Student Portal beginning April 27, 2025.
You must have your advising hold lifted to be able to register for fall term courses.
Before your meeting, do your research using the following tools:
- Pathways to a BU Degree: Review the academic requirements for your intended major
- Undergraduate Bulletin: Learn about program and course offerings in all of the schools and colleges at BU
- Advanced Credits: Students who wish to apply an Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or any other examination scores should consult with their CGS academic advisor. Please refer to the documents below for further information.
The following AP/IB scores award credit for the noted CGS sophomore courses and HUB units:
AP/IB Credit | Corresponding CGS Course | HUB Unit(s) |
AP Biology (Score of 4)* | NS 201 (Biology 1) | SI1 (Scientific Inquiry 1) |
AP Biology (score of 5) IB Biology Higher Level (score of 5 or above)* |
NS 201 (Biology I) and NS 202 (Human Ecology/Global Ecology) | SI1 and SI2 (Scientific Inquiry I and Scientific Inquiry II) |
IB Philosophy Higher Level (score of 5 or above) | HU 201 (History of Western Ethics I) and HU2xx (Elective credit only) | PLM (Philosophical Inquiry and Life’s Meaning) |
*Students who have AP/IB or other course credit for Chemistry or Physics should consult with their CGS academic advisor.

Step Two: Plan Your Fall Schedule
Which CGS courses should I take?
Consult the CGS Required Courses guide and discuss with your CGS academic advisor during your advising appointment. To complete the CGS requirements by the end of your sophomore year, you must have completed the following:
- 3 CGS Humanities Courses
- 3 CGS Social Science Courses
- 2 CGS Rhetoric Courses
- 2 CGS Natural Science Courses
The class numbers for Fall 2025 CGS courses are listed below.
- Humanities: CGS HU 201
- Natural Science: CGS NS 201
- Social Sciences: CGS SS 201
Remember:
- All your CGS course sections must start with the same letter! This indicates that all of your CGS courses are on the same team. Students who register incorrectly for their CGS courses will need to adjust their schedules accordingly in order to complete course registration.
- Correct CGS course registration: This student has registered correctly, since the section codes for both their CGS courses begin with the same letter (S). This student has registered for Team S.
- CGS NS201 SS (lecture) and S1 (lab)
- CGS HU201 SS (lecture) and S3 (discussion)
- Incorrect CGS course registration: This student has registered incorrectly, as they have signed up across two different Teams (Team W for NS201 and Team S for SS201). You may register for only one CGS team.
- CGS NS201 WW (lecture) and W1 (lab)
- CGS SS201 SS (lecture) and S3 (discussion)
- Correct CGS course registration: This student has registered correctly, since the section codes for both their CGS courses begin with the same letter (S). This student has registered for Team S.
- Use the Schedule Builder on MyBU Student before registration begins to plan your classes.
- Remember to plan multiple options! Your first choices may not be available at time of registration. Choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day.
Plan Your Electives
Students may to refer to the Pathways to a BU Degree on the CGS website as well as the Undergraduate Bulletin for guidance on elective course selection. Please review these links ahead of your required meeting with your CGS Academic Advisor.
Please note that the standard pass time between classes at Boston University is 15 minutes. It is not considered a time conflict to have two courses meeting back-to-back in different locations on campus.
- Please note that your elective classes do not need to start with the same letter as your CGS course sections.
- Remember to plan multiple options! The first class you choose may not work with your CGS required courses and choosing multiple options will save you from having to search multiple times on registration day. Use the Schedule Builder on MyBU Student before registration begins to plan your classes.
Step Three: Plan for Registration Day
Check the “Holds” tile on MyBU Student to confirm that you do not have any compliance holds on your account. A compliance hold will prevent a student from accessing course registration.
Registration for rising sophomores opens on Sunday, April 27, 2025. Your registration start time is based on the last digit of your BUID number:
Last Digit of BUID#: | Start Time: |
4 | 9:00AM |
3 | 9:30AM |
2 | 10:00AM |
1 | 10:30AM |
0 | 11:00AM |
9 | 11:30AM |
8 | 12:00PM |
7 | 12:30PM |
6 | 1:00PM |
5 | 1:30PM |
Please note that space in a preferred CGS team or desired section is not guaranteed. Students who are unable to register for a desired CGS team should select a different team that fits with their elective.
Step Four: Register for Classes
Prior to your registration date, be sure to check MyBU Student to confirm you are still in compliance for registration. If you have already met with your academic advisor and they approve of your fall class plans, your advising hold should be lifted in MyBU Student.
Use the Schedule Builder on MyBU Student before registration begins to plan your classes.
The resources below will help you navigate the registration process. Please consult with your CGS academic advisor with any specific questions.
