ENG: Mechanical
Sample Pathway
Below is an example of a four-year plan of a College of General Studies student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering (ENG). Students will work with their CGS academic advisors and the College of Engineering to plan their own pathway to a mechanical engineering degree.
The following sample pathway presumes that General Chemistry for the Engineering Sciences and Calculus 1 have been completed prior to matriculation.
| Gap Semester | Recommended external courses: Calculus I (equivalent to CAS MA 123) and General Chemistry I (equivalent to CAS CH 131 or CAS CH 101)^. Follow the pre-approval process for transferring courses.* | |
| Term 1 | Term 2 | |
| First Year | CGS RH 103 (4 units) CGS SS 103 (5 units) ENG EK 125 (4 units)** CAS MA 124 (4 units)** |
(Recommended: BU Summer 1) CAS PY 211 (4 units) (Recommended: London Summer 2) |
| Sophomore Year | CGS SS 201 (4 units) CAS MA 225 (4 units) ENG EK 103 (3 units) ENG EK 131 (2 units) ENG EK 301† (4 units) |
CGS HU 202 (4 units) CAS MA 226 (4 units) CAS PY 212 (4 units) ENG EK 307 (4 units) |
| Junior Year | ENG EK 381 (4 units) ENG EK 210 (2 units) ENG ME 304 (4 units) ENG ME 305 (4 units) ENG ME 357 (2 units) |
ENG ME 302 (4 units) ENG ME 303 (4 units) ENG ME 306 (4 units) ENG ME 358 (2 units) ENG ME 360 (4 units) |
| Senior Year | ENG ME 460 (4 units) ENG ME 310 (4 units) ENG ME 419 (4 units) Advanced Elective (4 units) |
ENG ME 461 (4 units) Advanced Elective (4 units) Advanced Elective (4 units) Advanced Elective (4 units) |
^ENG recommends that students pursuing the Mechanical Engineering major enroll in CAS CH 131 (General Chemistry for the Engineering Sciences). CAS CH 101 is also accepted for this requirement, but CAS CH 131 is strongly encouraged.
*Students entering Boston University with no prior coursework must expect a minimum of 8 semesters to complete the program. Prior approval must be granted for all external coursework.
**Students who have credit for CAS CS 111 must speak with their CGS academic advisor for further guidance.
***CGS Students pursuing Mechanical Engineering are advised to take CAS PY 211 at during Summer Term 1. CGS First Year students may enroll in one BU 4-unit course during the summer term opposite their CGS Summer semester free of charge. Students must arrange their own housing accommodations. More information available on the CGS Policy on Taking an Additional 4-Unit Course.
†ENG EK 301 is strongly advised to be taken in the Sophomore Year. Mechanical Engineering students who do not complete ENG EK 301 in the sophomore year may delay their graduation date.
Students should refer to the appropriate ENG Program Planning Sheet for more insight on course sequencing and degree planning.
