1950s
Bob Fine (DGE’55, CAS’57) of Tempe, Ariz., retired in June 2010 after 51 years of teaching at numerous colleges and universities. He writes, “I fancied myself a proud generalist in the social sciences, a perspective I developed at CGE [which later became DGE] in the 1950s and have been nourished by ever since. May your division have many more years of success in helping undergraduates learn to think deeply for themselves!”
Marcia (Edelstein) Grossbard (DGE’58, CAS’60, Wheelock’62) has retired from her career as a public-school speech/language pathologist.
1960s
Marvin Hershenson (CGS’65; CAS’68; Wheelock’71, ’73) writes, “I would like to say hello to all former classmates at the former College of Basic Studies. My two years there were exhilarating and inspirational. I really learned that I was intellectually competent. As a result, I furthered my education and received a doctorate at Indiana University-Bloomington. My career was mostly in private industry with some stopovers teaching college.”
Tim Miles (CGS’67) recently retired as associate director of the Office of Technology and Electronic Commerce in the International Trade Administration within the U.S. Department of Commerce. The married father of four writes, “I am looking forward to improving whatever skills I have as an amateur photographer and working on a book project in the years ahead. I have always been extremely grateful to CGS and the University of Southern California for the education I received at these great institutions.”
1970s
Mike Thayer (CGS’77, Questrom’79) writes that he still recalls fondly the lessons he learned while attending CBS (as the College was then known). “There were at CBS so many great professors: Milton Kornfeld, Rich Matlack, Garth Pitman, and others. All had individual teaching styles that exceeded my expectations. Learning became such a great journey that continues today. It all started with the spark from CBS.”

1980s
Lyman Jackson (CGS’81, Questrom’83) writes, “I would like to extend my greetings to many CGS classmates who have built great families and careers since we were together 30 years ago! I look back on my two years at CGS as the crucible which allowed me to turn around my academics and grow. After 20 years in corporate financial jobs, I have found myself an owner of a small financial planning firm in Newton, Mass. It is both gratifying and hard work—as are most things that are worth doing. I am married with three happy kids and an incredible spouse. What more could I ask for? Norma E. Roth (CGS’83, COM’85) recently published her first book, Pink Ribbon Journey: Stories From the Heart. Norma, a breast cancer survivor, spent five years working with an award-winning photographer to create a distinctive collection of photo essays that weave together the patient and clinical perspectives of breast cancer through the voices of survivors, their families, and the remarkable men and women who care for them. Tom Maloney (CGS’84) is the executive director of the Tejon Ranch Conservancy, a science-based land trust in Southern California. He assumed the position in early 2009 after eight years with The Nature Conservancy.
2000s
Michael Cohen (CGS’00, COM’02) and his wife, Joanna, are delighted to announce they’re expecting their first child in July. Michael was also recently named partner at The DBL Center in New York.

Erica V. Mosca (CGS’06, COM’08) graduated from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a master’s degree in education policy and management in May. She plans to return to Las Vegas, where she previously taught fifth grade through Teach For America. She writes that she hopes to help create systemic change in the Clark County School District and help her former students become future BU students.
