How To Make The Most Out Of Social Distancing
Just as your gap semester was an opportunity to stretch yourself, develop new hobbies, and self-direct your own growth, the current period of remote learning presents similar challenges and opportunities. As you practice social distancing, here are some ways to make the most out of your time away from campus.
Learn a new hobby (or pick an old one back up).
Have you ever wanted to learn how to play guitar or delve into a new language? Well, now you can! Take advantage of the extra time at home to pursue something you’ve always wanted to do. Not only will it make the time go by faster, but it may become a new lifelong skill! From cooking to juggling to finally picking back up the instrument you haven’t touched since middle school, the possibilities are endless.
Get moving.
Just because you no longer have FitRec at your fingertips doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to stay active. YouTube, workout apps, and free Zoom studio classes are great ways to keep moving without leaving your home. And a mid-day endorphins boost will help you stay motivated during long days of classes.
Read for pleasure.
Reading is a great way to take a break from technology. You can create a virtual book club with your friends and family, or just finally tackle the stack that’s been sitting next to your bed. E-books and digital library rentals are great ways to build your at-home library. While in college, it’s easy to forget that you can choose to read for fun. This is a great time to reconnect with that experience.
Do some spring cleaning.
Now is a great time to clean out your room, get rid of things you don’t need, and help your family members to keep things clean around the house. Look to Marie Kondo for inspiration — you’ll feel lighter and more productive when your space is neat and orderly.
Connect with friends and family.
Just because you’re social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t connect with your loved ones! Use FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or Zoom to host family dinners, book clubs with friends, or weekly catch-ups with your BU floormates! It’s important not to feel isolated during this time away, so don’t hesitate to reach out to the people you care about.
Focus on you.
Self-care is critical throughout this stressful time. While the pressure to stay productive can be high, be sure to prioritize your mental health as well. It’s important to take breaks and to do things that make you happy. Don’t be afraid to slow down.
